I can probably drink a bottle of wine by myself on any given night. Add a few people into the mix, and we can down 2-3 (or more) bottles. So it doesn’t come as much as a surprise to me when I read that Americans drink more wine than any other country.

The United States gained the lead in the wine buying race in 2013 when the country as a whole bought more wine than the then-winner France, according to the Huffington Post. But the French kept the lead in consumption of wine. In 2011, the average French-man drank a total of 46.4 liters of wine (holy cow), while the mer American downed only 9.1 liters per person. To break this down further, that means that the French drank, on average, 1.2 bottles of wine a week that year – six times more than the Americans.

Well, it’s common knowledge that the Americans don’t like to lose, so why would they let France beat them on alcohol consumption? Since 2011, America has increased their per-person consumption number by 17% – averaging the annual consumption to be about 12 liters per person (16 bottles.)

So, well done America. Cheers!
